Allan Compton, M.D., Ph.D. Profile Allan Compton is a psychoanalyst, certified by the Board on Professional Standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association; a psychiatrist, certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology; a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA, Department of Biobehavioral Sciences. He is a member of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA), the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA, the New Center for Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles (NCP), the Los Angeles Society and Institute for Psychoanalytic Studies (LAISPS) and the Society for Psychotherapy Research (SPR). He is the founder, president and chair, Board of Directors, of the Los Angeles Center for Psychoanalytic Research. He is also the founder of the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Foundation. Allan Compton has been in the private practice of psychoanalysis and psychiatry since 1964, in New York and then in Los Angeles, except for two years as Chief of Psychiatry, Naval Hospital, Long Beach, California, during the Vietnam conflict. He has taught courses almost continuously since 1970 at UCLA, the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Institute and, for twenty years, at the Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute. At LAPSI he is a Training and Supervising Analyst. He has published extensively on basic psychoanalytic concepts---drives, affects and objects---, on technic and clinical theory, and on clinical psychopathology. He has served two terms on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association; on the Editorial Board of the Psychoanalytic Quarterly for 17 years; and as a paper referee for the International Journal of Psychoanalysis. In the last 20 years he has added empirical research and organizational administration to his interests and activities. During medical school he held a research fellowship to investigate the pharmacology of acrylamide (a highly specific neurotoxic agent affecting cerebellar function). More recently he was awarded a grant by the Fund for Psychoanalytic Research as Principal Investigator for a clinical research project on anxiety and agoraphobia. He has served on multiple committees of the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Society, including two terms on the Finance Committee. He was elected Treasurer of the Society. He followed a similar course with the American Psychoanalytic Association, by whom he was also elected Treasurer. He has also been active in financial and other administrative work with the IPA, including serving as Chair, North America, New Groups. Compton is now seeking a second term as Councilor-at-Large for the American Psychoanalytic Association. |
